Bridges & Roadways

Roadways and bridges offer birds and other wildlife places to live and thrive.  Unfortunately almost always, their activity can also cause problems which may affect the safety of those who may need to use roads and bridges.  In particular, the accumulation of bird feces with high acidic properties can lead to premature failure of metal or concrete fittings. Maintenance crews responsible for monitoring the structural integrity of roadways and bridges are often negligent in taking into account the consequences of long term accumulations of bird feces on structural members.

Mud nests built by swallows under or around highway or bridge overpasses present a unique hazard to the vehicular traffic passing under them.  Imagine an automobile traveling along at 65mph and a portion or portions of hardened mud falling and striking the windshield of that automobile.  The results could be devastating.  It is imperative that affected overpasses be inspected during cliff swallow nest building season to insure that nests are not built where motorist safety may be compromised.  When nesting of swallows is apparent, immediate action for the removal or prevention of swallow nest building should be taken.

ipm-BioCare, Inc. has undertaken a number of bridge and roadway projects which involved the prevention or removal of bird nesting activity.  Our expertise in this area of wildlife management is second to none.  Solutions in these types of situations always requires careful consideration of the habits of species type, quality of materials to be used, and how the barriers can be safely installed.
